Breed Overview
Origin & Historical Purpose
The Azawakh is an ancient sighthound originating from the Sahel region of West Africa, particularly among nomadic Tuareg and other Saharan pastoralist cultures. These dogs were traditionally bred to guard camps, protect livestock, and hunt game across vast desert landscapes. Highly valued for their speed, endurance, and loyalty, Azawakhs developed as both working partners and cultural companions of the nomadic tribes. The breed remained largely unknown outside Africa until the late 20th century, when small numbers were exported to Europe and North America. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2019 within the Hound Group and by the Canadian Kennel Club in 2018 in the Hound Group.
Physical Standard & Breed Characteristics
The Azawakh is a tall, extremely lean sighthound built for speed and stamina in hot desert environments. Males typically stand between 25 and 29 inches at the shoulder and weigh approximately 44 to 55 pounds, while females generally measure between 23.5 and 27 inches and weigh around 33 to 44 pounds. The breed is known for its very short coat and extremely fine skin that clearly reveals underlying muscle and bone structure. Accepted coat colors vary widely and may include fawn, red, brindle, sand, or combinations with white markings. The long legs, deep chest, and narrow waist contribute to the breed’s distinctive, elegant silhouette.
Temperament & Behavioral Profile
Temperamentally, the Azawakh is known for strong loyalty to its family and a reserved or aloof nature with strangers. The breed forms deep bonds with its household and often displays protective instincts toward its home and people. While affectionate with those it trusts, the Azawakh is typically independent and dignified rather than overtly demonstrative.
Exercise & Mental Requirements
Exercise needs are moderate to high. As a sighthound developed for open terrain, the Azawakh enjoys opportunities to run and stretch its long stride. Regular exercise, including long walks or secure areas for running, helps maintain physical fitness and mental well-being. Despite their athletic ability, many Azawakhs are calm indoors when their activity needs are met.
Grooming & Maintenance
Grooming requirements are minimal. The short coat requires only occasional brushing to remove loose hair, and the breed generally stays clean with little odor. Routine care such as nail trimming, dental hygiene, and ear cleaning supports overall health and comfort.
Health Overview & Recommended Testing
The Azawakh typically lives between 12 and 15 years and is considered a relatively healthy breed with a limited number of documented inherited conditions. Responsible breeders commonly screen for hip dysplasia, autoimmune thyroid disease, and certain cardiac concerns. Careful breeding practices help maintain the breed’s athletic structure and overall health.
